Helping You Grow the Hair You Were Told You Couldn’t

3 Natural Hair Growth Tips I Wish I Knew Sooner (Especially for Type 4 and 4C Hair)

June 27, 2025 · Uncategorized

If I had to start my natural hair journey over, I would focus on just three things. These three habits changed everything for my hair growth, retention, and overall hair health.

Whether you’re just beginning your journey or frustrated with a lack of progress, these practices can help you grow long, strong natural hair without excessive breakage or stress.

1. Long-Term Protective Styling (Done Correctly)

Protective styling is one of the most popular methods for growing natural hair, but not all protective styles are helpful. In fact, when done improperly, they can cause breakage, tension, and hair loss.

The two most important parts of protective styling are:

  • Installation: Avoid tight braids, small parts along your edges, and excessive tension. Use minimal added hair near delicate areas.
  • Takedown: Be patient. Use oils or butters to gently separate the hair and avoid ripping through shed hair. Detangle before washing to prevent matting.

My personal method was to redo a few braids per day after the one-month mark. This allowed me to maintain the style without buildup, excessive shed hair, or tension on the scalp. I never waited until the three-month mark to take everything down at once. Doing it gradually was healthier and less stressful.

2. No Brushes or Combs

I stopped using brushes and combs altogether, and that decision alone significantly reduced breakage. Even with conditioner and oils, I found that detangling tools always caused snapping.

Instead, I use my fingers to detangle. It might sound time-consuming, but when broken into small sections and done over a few days, it becomes a manageable habit. I can detangle while watching TV, talking on the phone, or even while walking around the house.

The difference in retention was undeniable. Less mechanical damage meant more strands stayed on my head, and I finally began seeing real growth. If you’re not seeing length retention, this is one habit worth trying for at least six months.

3. A Loving and Respectful Hair Mindset

This was the hardest but most impactful shift in my journey. I had to stop fighting my hair and start respecting it as it is.

When I let go of the need for perfectly slicked edges, symmetrical parts, or polished styles, I began to treat my hair more gently. I stopped using hard gels, tight brushes, and tools that worked against my hair’s natural pattern.

Loving your hair means not trying to force it to be something it is not. It means being patient during detangling. It means choosing styles that protect rather than styles that impress others at the expense of your edges and length.

Once I made this mental shift, everything else in my routine became easier. I no longer felt frustrated by tangles or shrinkage. I stopped expecting my hair to behave like a different texture. I accepted it for what it is, and that acceptance helped my hair thrive.

Final Thoughts

If you’re serious about growing your natural hair, especially type 4 and 4C textures, focus on eliminating damaging habits and building a consistent routine centered on care and patience.

These three tips helped me see the length I never thought I could reach:

  • Gentle, long-term protective styling with proper maintenance
  • Eliminating brushes and combs from my routine
  • Adopting a respectful, loving mindset toward my hair

Growth is possible when your routine matches your goals. If you’re ready to stop fighting your hair and start working with it, now is the perfect time to commit.
